Walking in the cold I thought we'd never get there. After what seemed like forever we were able to see the lake. You could tell just how thick the ice was just by the look of it. I started to run afraid that if I didn't get there soon it would disappear and I would never be able to find it again. I just kept running fast and fast until I was at the edge of the lake. I wanted to put on my skates and just run onto the ice and skate to my hearts content but I knew that the odds of me getting hurt or falling through the ice were a lot higher if I didn't have one of the older kids check it first. I waited for them to catch up. When they finally got there I waited for them to check and make sure the ice was safe. When they said we could come on the ice I sat down put my skates on as fast as I could and when they were tied tight, I stood up and walked onto the ice being very careful so I wouldn't fall. When I thought I was far enough from the edge I started to just skate and let my legs carry me were ever they wanted I didn't care where I went cause when I'm on the ice I don't care about the rest of the world. I can be myself and not have to worry about what other people think. When I'm on the ice the rest of the world just disappears and I just enjoy myself as I jump and twirl in the air. I heard clapping but I didn't care if they were watching me or if they were just complimenting me on the jump as long as I had fun doing it I didn't care about anything. Until I heard the sound of ice cracking. I immediately looked at my feet and saw cracks forming in the ice. I looked at the older kids and my face must have said it all cause they immediately turned and got everybody off the ice and keeping them off the edge. One of the older girls was starting to get on the ice to come and help me the ice cracked around her feet. She instinctively stepped off the ice and just in time cause that piece of ice cracked and had water seeping over it. She looked right at me with a worried face but I just calmed down and tried to get to the side of the lake closest to me. I was so close to the edge and to safety when my feet started to sink and get all wet. All of the kids had gone to the side I was trying to reach and they kept trying to reach me with their hands and pull me to safety. They had got my hand and were pulling me toward the edge but at the same time my boots had gotten heavy and were pulling me down with the current. I was starting to get scared and I thought I might drown but then I got pulled onto the edge of the lake with my cold, wet boots. I was just shivering and really cold but also, I was a little relieved that I had people who had my back and would help me when I was in trouble. One of the older boys gave me a piggy back ride and ran me to the house as fast as he could go. Then he got me in the house, put me on the couch, took my coat and boots, got me a blanket and hot chocolate. He said I should stay inside and warm up. But the thing was I didn't want to stay inside, I wanted to go outside and play some more but, the second I tried to get up and get my coat and boots he picked me up and sat me right back on the couch. He told me that he was going to sit there and make sure I stayed put. But eventually he would go do something in the kitchen and I could get my things on and run out the door. Sadly that happened after I fell asleep on the couch. When I woke up he was still there sitting on the foot rest to the old chair my grandparents had at their house. He had turned on the TV and was watching a Christmas special. When he noticed I was up he said that I could go outside but I would have to find some dry boots and a coat. Since mine were still wet. When I couldn't find any he said that I would have to stay inside. He started to walk out the door but I told him that I didn't want to stay in the house by myself. He told me that he would stay if I would like that. I nodded so he sat back on the foot rest and watched the TV special. When it was time for me to go home with my parents I started to run to the door but, then I stopped and turned around, ran to him, and gave him a hug when I whispered thanks for not leaving me. when I let go I looked at his face and he was smiling at me and said no problem kiddo. He ruffled my hair a little. Before I left I took one last look at him and asked him can we be friends? He said sure thing and smiled one last time. Then I turned and walked out the door. I hugged my relatives good-bye. As I watched my grandparents house disappear into the distance I began to wonder if I would ever see him again. I hoped I would then I asked mom if he would be there next year and she said I'm sure he will be and smiled at me right before she turned the radio up a little to listen to one of her favorite Christmas songs. As she sang along to the lyrics I just stared out the window and watched the snow fall hoping that my mom was right and that he would be there next year but I would have to just wait and find out.
